Shelton Creek Trail
(Date Posted 4/3/2015)

The students in the CHOICE High School CTE Natural Resources class have spent the school year learning and applying methods of trail construction and maintenance as part of a community project that will leave a lasting legacy. Led by CHOICE staff members John Johnson and Doug Sells, the class has partnered with the City of Shelton in creating the Shelton Creek Trail in Downtown Shelton. “This is a project that has been talked about quite a bit for at least the last 10-12 years,” says John Johnson, CTE teacher at CHOICE. “Anybody who has visited the Shelton Creek canyon understands what a unique place it is in the city, and the importance of making it more accessible to everybody to enjoy.”

The trail follows Shelton Creek from the waterfall behind the library downtown, up the canyon to 13th Street near Mason General Hospital. It is a quick walk from the CHOICE campus and creates a walkable link between important parts of the city. Adds Johnson: “The beauty of creating this park so close to our campus is that the students are applying the skills they learn, getting a valuable lesson in what it means to go to work outside in the elements every day, and taking leadership roles in the community by partnering with other stakeholders to make it a better place to live.”

The community response to the project has been overwhelmingly positive. Property owners nearby have delivered cookies and doughnuts to the students while at work, and have offered lots of encouragement with written notes and personal conversations at the jobsite. “We have enjoyed so much enthusiastic support from so many folks,” says Johnson.

“The CTE Director and our principal have been behind us with the staffing and money to purchase tools and supplies. Scott Ranney, a teacher in the district, has milled and donated lumber for building bridges, while Manke Lumber has donated treated timbers for stair building. Mark Zeigler, the Parks and Recreation director for the City of Shelton is responsible for getting the project going and seeing the value in partnering with us to get the trail built. The city parks department has given us everything we asked for. The students are proud to be working with them to create something meaningful and important to the quality of life here.”

Educational Funding and the 2015 Legislative Session
(Date Posted 1/13/2015)
Randy Dorn discussing education funding
The 2015 Legislative Session could be one of the most challenging in decades. The reason is education funding.
The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has created materials (including a short video) that explain the basics of education funding and the State Supreme Court case McCleary v. State of Washington: http://www.k12.wa.us/LegisGov/Session2015.aspx. If you have any questions or comments about the documents, please email commteam@k12.wa.us.
