7th Grade Math Syllabus, 2011-12 School Year
Mrs. Long, Mr. Adams & Mr. Parnell
Welcome to an exciting year in 7th grade math at Olympic Middle School!  Your mission this year is to continue your journey towards becoming a Mathematician!

7th Grade Math Expectations:
1. Come to class prepared to learn.
Attend class every day and bring your Math Tools with you, including your binder, paper, and pencils (no pens).
2. Pay attention in class.
We’re all responsible for our classroom learning climate. If we’re off task, talking when we shouldn’t be talking, out of our seats, etc., we are being DISRUPTIVE to the learning process. None of us have the right to interfere with the learning, safety or well-being of others.
3. Ask Questions.
This is important for letting your teachers know how to help you.  We all have the right to ask reasonable questions and get them answered.
4. Actively participate in mathematics.
Turn in all assignments on time with no excuses.   You will have frequent opportunities to improve your work when you are not satisfied.
5. You must seek help when you are confused at OMS.
Your teachers are available before school starts and after school.  We will watch you closely but it is also your responsibility to tell us when you need help.  Math Academy, and Jump Start are available to students to need additional help on a daily basis.
6. Practice Mathematical Thinking.
Mathematical thinkers do things that show their understanding of the mathematics. This includes: writing out answers to questions using complete sentences; showing all the work, including calculations; labeling math work so that it is clear; writing/printing neatly so that people can read their work, and explaining the reasoning behind answers.

Standards Based Grades for Math:
Your grades will be based on achievement during the semester on multiple assessments (tests).  For best results, you should complete all daily and homework assignments for the best practice.  You will also receive Learning Habit scores on your report card, which include grades for Behavior, Group Work, Participation, and Work Completion.

Math Portfolios:
In 7th Grade you will be required to use two spiral notebooks (one per semester) to show and keep track of daily math practice.  You will use them for daily warm up problems, writing down daily objectives, practicing daily class work, and taking notes.  These portfolios count as part of the Learning Habits Participation grade, as well as provide an opportunity to showcase the quality and quantity of daily work to parents throughout the year. They will be stored in the classroom then sent home at the end of the semester along with final grades.  Please see your teacher if you are having trouble providing these two spiral notebooks for class.

Tests/Quizzes:
We also call these “assessments.”  Assessments are typically given at least three times on a specific mathematical skill to allow opportunities to improve and to show growth. We expect that by the third assessment that students will be able to meet standard.   You are expected to study and retake tests when you don’t meet standard.   Tests/quizzes must be taken, even if you were absent. Please see your teacher to arrange a make-up test/quiz if you are absent.

Homework:
Homework packets are assigned on a weekly basis, given out on Monday, and due on the following Thursday.  These homework problems are specifically designed to be completed a few problems each night to go along with concepts taught in class that day.  We expect students to be spending about 20-30 minutes per night on math homework. Homework is counted under Learning Habits as the Work Completion grade.
Weekly homework assignments will be posted on the OMS 7th Grade Math  page under the Assignments link for students and parents to access from school and at home. https://www.sheltonschools.org/Olympic/Classrooms/7thGrade/Math/Homework/Forms/AllItems.aspx

CMP Textbook:

OMS is teaching from CMP2 (Connected Mathematics Project 2).  This curriculum works well to teach students to solve problems by investigating mathematical situations in groups of four.  Our school scores show us that grouping helps even the most advanced student progress more.  To save money for the district, we did not purchase student texts to take home but they are available online in PDF format for viewing and printing on the OMS 7th Grade Math page under the Textbook link: https://www.sheltonschools.org/Olympic/Classrooms/7thGrade/Math/Textbook/Forms/AllItems.aspx

We really appreciate your help in assisting your child to become a Math Thinker! Two really big things you can do for us and your child is to make sure that homework is completed each night it is assigned and that your child studies for tests/quizzes. Thanks again for your help.
