Students who need to improve their reading fluency have two curriculums available to them. The first is one of only two research-validated programs in the nation: SRA Corrective Reading--Decoding. There are several levels in this curriculum and students are grouped according to their ability. Groups are small and the teacher directly interacts with students in each portion of the lesson. Each lesson includes phonics, word structure, spelling, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
The other program we use is Read Naturally, a research-based fluency program. There are 24 lessons at each grade level. The lesson includes a reading passage, multiple choice and short answer comprehension questions and a re-tell of the passage. Students begin each lesson with a 1-minute timing. The words correct per minute score is recorded and a goal wcpm score is set. The student then listens to and reads with a CD recording of the lesson to demonstrate and paractice fluency. When the student feels he is ready to meet his goal, the teacher again times for 1 minute.
