I use a variety of curriculum materials to help students improve their reading comprehension skills.
SRA Corrective Reading--Comprehension is a program that teaches students how to think deductively and highlights vocabulary used in every day life as well as content area vocabulary (especially science).  Students work in small groups at their level of ability.
Soar to Success is a program that consists of short, high interest, vocabulary rich books that are used to teach comprehension strategies.  Strategies practiced are previewing, accessing prior knowledge before reading, making and revising predictions, visualizing, monitoring for and clarifying meaning, making connections and summarizing.
The Single Skills series of books offers practice in the reading comprehension skills of Using Context Clues, Locating the Answer, Getting the Facts, Following Directions and Detecting the Sequence.  Practice for each skill is offered at 5 different reading levels, so students can work independently at their reading level.
