Rock and Roll: An American Story
Grades: 10-12; one semester course; 0.5 credit(s)

Course Description:
The course is for all high school students regardless of musical background. Students will learn how to read and notate music, will learn the history of jazz (America's own true musical style) and will learn how to play a very basic musical instrument.

Concert Band A and B
Grades: 10-12; full-year course; 1.0 credit(s)

Course Description:
The course will increase student’s ability to play an instrument and work to develop potential. Emphasis will be placed on developing self-confidence and poise. The student is expected to sign up for a full year and attendance at performances is required. Prior experience playing a band instrument is required.
Prerequisite: Completion of junior high band, at least three years playing experience, or willingness to take private lessons to increase skills and come up to 9th grade level

Honors Choir (Chamber Singers)

Course Description:
Honors Choir/Chamber Singers is a select mixed ensemble focused on advanced chamber and a cappella repertoire from a variety of stylistic periods. It is a rehearsal and performance intense ensemble with extra out-of-class rehearsals and numerous community performances (particularly during early December). Fee: Approximately $50 - $100 for performance outfit.
Prerequisite: Audition only.


Introduction to the Arts

Course Description:
An overview course incorporating the study of art forms which could include visual arts, music, theatre and dance to aid students in understanding, appreciating, and communicating effectively through the arts. This class offers the student a safe environment to experiment with the arts.

Honors Jazz Choir (Illusions)

Grades: 10-12; full-year course; 1.0 credit(s)

Course Description:
Honors Jazz Choir/Illusions is a auditioned, vocal jazz ensemble consisting of 10-15 singers and an instrumental rhythm section. Ensemble members are required to attend all performances and must display a strong commitment to the ensemble, committing to participation in the group for the entire school year. Fee: $50 - $100 for performance outfit.
Prerequisite: Audition only.


Concert Choir

Grades: 10-12; one semester course; 0.5 credit(s)

Course Description:
NO SINGING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! Concert Choir is a non-auditioned, large group open to all Shelton High School students who want to learn to sing and perform in a variety of choral styles. Concert Choir performs at all regularly-scheduled school concerts. There will be required evening performances about twice a semester. Fee: None.

Jazz Band A and B

Grades: 9-12; full-year course; 0.25 credit(s)

Course Description:
This class is taught over a full year with 0.25 credit each semester. Students will study the various musical techniques and stylistic skills in the performance of traditional and contemporary jazz ensemble music. Performance at many events, both at home and across the state, is expected. This course meets outside of the school day. Some travel opportunities may be possible.
Prerequisite: Must be concurrently enrolled in a SHS performing ensemble, successful audition or director's placement.


Marching Band

Grades: 9-12; one semester course; 0.5 credit(s)

Course Description:
This class will supplement musical skills learned in concert band with various physical skills and drills through the presentation of a competitive marching show. This class meets outside the regular school day period, which is scheduled for marching band camp in August and two evenings per week in September and October. Fee: Approximately $100.
Prerequisite: Completion of eighth grade band or an interest in learning color guard routines
