Physical Education Courses

Changes for a Healthy You A and B

Course Description:
This class is designed to meet the needs of students having difficulty participating in a regular physical education class and who want to make long-lasting changes toward a healthier life style. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to participate in the federally funded Teen Outreach Program (TOP) or Community Voices Youth Panel facilitated by Planned Parenthood to learn about healthy relationships, life skills and to create a service learning project.

Recreational Swimming

Course Description:
This class is more for the recreational swimmer who already has some knowledge of basic swimming strokes but wants some other swimming activities as well.

Volleyball & Softball

Course Description:
Softball and volleyball skills will be developed in this class along with knowledge of game strategies to enjoy these two lifetime sports. Related fitness activities will also be included.

Basketball

Course Description:
Skill development and strategies in Ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and flag football will be the focus of this class along with related fitness games and conditioning.

Racquet Sports

Course Description:
Students will learn skills and strategies in tennis, badminton, pickleball and ping pong. Fitness training will also be included.

Beginning Weight Training

Course Description:
This introductory class to weight training teaches safe lifting techniques and how to design a personal, effective strength program. Students will learn about factors that influence strength, such as diet, physiology, and rest. This class is for students who have little or no weight lifting experience and is a prerequisite to Advanced Weight Training.

Aerobics & Nutrition

Course Description:
A fun way to get fit! This class includes floor, step, yoga and strength aerobics to music 4 days a week. Once a week, students learn nutritional information through activities and projects. Students will develop their own fitness routine to lead the class and learn self-defense skills.

Teaching Kids to Swim

Grades: 10-12; one semester course; 0.5 credit(s)

Course Description:
Students must be reliable and responsible and enjoy working with young children. The first three weeks of class, students will learn how to teach basic swimming skills to elementary students. The remainder of the semester, students will teach swimming to first through fourth grade students. High school students successfully completing this course will earn a Red Cross WSI Aide certification.
Prerequisite: Intermediate to advanced swimming skills and instructor permission only.


Health

Course Description:
This course explores health and wellness of an individual by studying topics around values, goals, fitness, nutrition, relationships, sexual health, drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Discussion and activities explore healthy and unhealthy choices while learning skills needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Intermediate /Advance Swimming

Course Description:
This class is for the advanced swimmer. Focus will be on improving swimming techniques and swim conditioning, with an introduction to the game of water polo.
Prerequisite: Passed Beginning Swimming or instructor permission.


Beginning Swimming

Course Description:
This course is for those students who have had little swimming instruction and need to work on improving swimming skills. Diving skills and physical conditioning will be included in the class.

Advanced Weight Training

Course Description:
This class is designed to improve pure strength and athleticism. Students learn to design workouts for specific goals and how to monitor their success towards their personal goals. Students must be highly motivated, have a strong desire to improve and be willing to challenge themselves. Because of safety issues, this course has prerequisites.
Prerequisite: Passed Beginning Weight Training, participated in weight training on a high school sports team or approval by instructor.


Fitness and Games

Course Description:
This course emphasis will be on fitness, basic sport skills, and enjoyment of lifelong activity through a variety of games and sports.
