Math Adoption
Shelton School District is beginning a comprehensive process to select new mathematics instructional materials that support high-quality teaching and learning for all students. Our goal is to identify materials that are aligned to the new Washington State K–12 Mathematics Learning Standards and provide a coherent, engaging learning experience across grade levels.
Our adoption process will focus on materials that:
- Align to the new Washington State K–12 Mathematics Learning Standards, including the new data literacy standards
- Support the needs of all learners, including multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students performing above or below grade level
- Provide high-quality, coherent instructional design that supports teachers and reduces cognitive load
- Engage students in meaningful mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making connected to real-life situations
The Process
The adoption process will be undertaken by the adoption committee and overseen by the Instructional Materials Committee, following board policy. We will begin with an exploration of available mathematics programs and opportunities for publishers and developers to share their materials. This initial information-gathering phase will help the district develop a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) and establish criteria for evaluating materials.
Following the formal selection process, Shelton School District plans to implement a new mathematics program for grades 5–12 and pilot a new K–4 program during the 2027–28 school year, with full K–4 adoption to follow.
Throughout the process, the adoption committee—consisting of educators representing a variety of roles and K–12 experience, as well as administrators—will review materials and consider how well they meet the needs of Shelton students and teachers. Our goal is to select high-quality, research-based mathematics materials that provide strong instructional support and promote meaningful mathematical learning for every student.
