The purpose of the Adoption Committee is the evaluation and recommendation of instructional materials for adoption to the Shelton School District Instructional Materials Committee IMC. After review of the decision by the Adoption Committee, the IMC submits the instructional materials for approval by the Shelton School Board.

The adoption committee’s role is the recommendation of instructional materials that best meet the needs of Shelton School District students, in preparing them to advance to the next educational level and culminate in college and career readiness.

The committee ensures that adoption decisions are fair and unbiased to potential selections under review and evaluation and that the processes include appropriate representation from stakeholders. In addition, the committee ensures materials conform to applicable state and federal laws and meet the goals and/or learning standards of the district and state

Responsibilities of Adoption Committee Members

  • Attend ALL scheduled meetings
  • Adhere to agreed-upon group norms
  • Contribute to the group’s work

In addition, all instructional materials committee members must display the following qualities:

  • Willingness to learn about the research and best practices for the content area and utilize the information in evaluating instructional materials
  • Review student achievement, demographic and materials field-test data to assist in decision making
  • Consider information from teachers and other educators from surveys, interviews, or other methods.
  • Ability to listen to and consider all perspectives and points of view interpersonal and communication skills contributing to group work and discussions
  • Ability to abide by majority decisions of the committee
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when required to ensure fairness in commercially competitive transactions
