Recently, a situation occurred in which a staff member was asked to not wear clothing displaying political content while at work. We understand this has raised concerns among students, families, and members of our community. The district respects employees’ First Amendment rights and appreciates the staff member’s cooperation. State law and district policy require that employees’ personal expression not interfere with the learning environment. These guidelines apply to all staff, regardless of the viewpoint or topic, and are designed to help maintain a constructive and welcoming learning environment for every student.
We understand that strong feelings have been expressed and we respect the community’s right to express concerns when issues arise. At the same time, we ask that this be done without threatening or targeting our staff. Our priority is to maintain safe campuses and ensure that teaching and learning continue without interruption, and we take seriously our responsibility to create learning environments where all students and staff feel safe and welcome.
We are reminding staff about state laws and district expectations regarding political expression and trust our employees to follow school board policies that uphold these commitments:
We anticipate further dialogue throughout the school year as our community navigates moments when differing viewpoints arise. Ensuring peaceful, respectful conversations is essential to preserving our core mission: providing exceptional learning experiences so every student can thrive.
Questions or concerns can always be directed to the district’s Civil Rights Coordinator, Tabitha Whiting, [email protected].
