2.2 District Overview

The Shelton School District’s mission statement is:

A shared commitment to provide the most effective education to all students so they live successful
lives.

The Shelton School District’s vision statement is:

With pride and professionalism we will hold all students to a high standard, which means that we
must hold ourselves to a high standard. We will recognize that our students bring us a diverse set of
individual interests, capabilities and aspirations; and we will nurture all of them. We will act on our
conviction that all families want their children to achieve in school and that all students would prefer
to be successful; and we will begin early to help those students apply themselves to success.

Shelton School District History

The Shelton School District began in 1854 with eight students in a single room cabin at the present day
Walker Park near the community of Shelton, Washington.  Later that year, William Walter was named as
the County Superintendent of schools by Isaac Stevens, the First Governor of Washington Territory.
Twelve years later, a second one room school was built on the shore of Oakland Bay.  In 1885, the first
full school in the City of Shelton was built.  Over time, the single county wide school district splintered into
7 Districts.  Shelton School District maintaining the highest population, as it was centered around the
county’s largest community.

Shelton opened Lincoln High School in 1909, allowing 9-12 Grade for the first time in Mason County.  A
new replacement Reed High School was built in 1924 and the current Shelton High School was complete
in 1972.  Shelton still provides High School to adjacent rural districts without one.  Shelton built its first
middle school in 1932, and was used until 1990 when the current Oakland Bay Jr. High School opened.
Bordeaux Elementary was initially built in 1927, torn down and replaced in 1955 and expanded and
modernized in 2003.  Mountain View Elementary was built in 1955.  A new Evergreen Elementary was
built in 2003 and Olympic Middle School was added in 2004 to help overcrowding in the mid grades and
the High School.

In early 2017, Shelton School District voters passed a bond for $65 Million.  This will be used to replace
Mountain View Elementary and an expansion of Shelton High School to allow for more classrooms and
an auxiliary gym to accommodate returning 9th grade to the campus.

Demographics

Shelton School District provides services for over 4000 students in a K to 12 program.  There are three
K-5 elementary schools, one 6-7 middle school, one 8-9 junior high school, one 10-12 high school and
an alternative high school.

In 2019-2020 School Year, Shelton School District will reconfigure grade levels when bond funded school
construction is complete.  This will change our Elementary schools to be K-4, intermediate schools will
be 5-8 and the High School will be 9-12.
