Safety Information
An Active Shooter or Critical Incident can happen anywhere, at any time.
Shelton isn't immune to the risk, thus a reason for a proactive approach is necessary on every level.
Before an Incident
Personal Safety For Staff
- Be Alert
- Be Attentive to your surroundings
- Be Observant of behaviors and things that seem out of place
- Wear Identification
- Require Visitor Identification
- Keep doors locked
- Close/Lock doors when not in the classroom
- Carry keys on your person
- Review contents of the classroom evacuation bag, add items you feel you and your students will need
- Review emergency reference guide (colored flip chart)
- Do not prop open exterior doors

Action Plan
- Assess your space
- Locate all possible exits
- Identify hiding locations and possible barriers
- Note items that can be used as weapons
- Map out evacuation route, plan at least 2 different routes evacuating in different directions.
During an Incident
RUN
- If it is Safe to run away do so
- If there is an escape route, move quickly to a safe area
- If a staff is present, follow their instructions
- Escape by exits or windows
- Leave your belongings behind
- Help others escape
- Prevent and warn others along the way about the danger
- Run to any safe area. This may mean running off campus to a nearby home or business
- Call 911 when safe to do so
HIDE
When an attacker is spotted:
- Hide until help arrives
- Lock and/or barricade your door
- Silence all electronic devices
- Hide behind large objects
- Remain calm and quite
- Your hiding place should be out of attackers view, provide protection, not trap or restrict your options
- Lock and barricade the door, turn off lights and close blinds
- Do not leave the area until given the all-clear signal
FIGHT
- Fight as a last resort
- Attempt to incapacitate the attacker
- Improvise weapons, use any means
- Commit to your actions
When Law Enforcement Arrives
- Remain calm
- Keep hands visible
- Avoid pointing or yelling
- Know that help for injured is on the way
Incident Duration usually lasts 5-12 minutes
Police arrive on the scene in 2-7 minute
